PHASE II (2008-09)
Overview
The kickoff event for phase 2 of the Higher Education Coordinating Board’s English and science college readiness project was held on May 9-10. Forty-three educators from across the state participated, including members of four phase 2 college readiness pilot teams (see below)—2 English teams and 2 science teams, and team leaders Bill Condon (WSU) and Pinky Nelson (WWU). Other K-12, community college and baccalaureate educators, and representatives of state education organizations also were invited to participate as a way of obtaining additional input and perspectives that could help guide phase 2.
Following a brief overview of phase 1 of the English and science college readiness project, including goals and objectives for phase 2, team-centered and whole group discussions were held to identify if college readiness definitions are currently part of best practices, and how the definitions could inform best practices. The groups also identified issues or concerns that could affect implementation in K-12 classrooms, and how the definitions could be reshaped for more effective use by K-12 and higher education. An overview also was presented on approaches to project evaluation.
