PHASE II (2008-10)
Strategies
Since there are no state-developed Grade Level Expectations for 11th or 12th grade English or science, pilot teams of educators will construct learning experiences to bridge the gap between 10th grade and college-level learning expectations. Pilot teams will integrate college readiness definitions and attributes with grade-level assignments and course materials while students learn content.
Beginning in September 2008, English teachers will pilot college readiness teaching strategies in 11th and 12th grade classrooms in Spokane and Yakima.
As a result of a 4-day summer college readiness institute held in June 2008, science teams will pilot college readiness teaching strategies in 9th and 10th grade classrooms in Eatonville and Mount Vernon. Team members unanimously agreed that this could be an important strategy in motivating students to take science in their junior and senior years of high school and, thus, be better prepared for science in college. The intent is to reach general education students who do not necessarily know if they are going to college or what they are going to major in.
